Montessori cards
Compose and decompose numbers with Montessori cards.
Each place (units, tens, hundreds, thousands) is a coloured card. Pick a value for each place - the number is composed and you see its decomposition '300 + 40 + 7'.
Learning objectives
- Grade 1Discover the ten as a group of ten units. The child uses two cards (units, tens) and sees that 23 is 20 and 3.
- Grade 2Move up to the hundred. The child sees that 347 is 300 + 40 + 7, and that each digit's place changes its value.
- Grade 3Consolidate reading numbers up to 999. The cards make the role of the inner zero visible: 305 is 300 + 5, not 35.
- Grade 4Introduce thousands. The child organises numbers into classes (thousands, hundreds, tens, units) to read 4,218 without hesitation.
- Grade 5Master numbers up to 9,999. The canonical decomposition prepares written calculation, rounding and unit conversion.
